The 2012 International Eucharistic Congress is coming up quick.. It'll be a week of celebration, but also a chance for atonement. Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, Archdiocese of Dublin, Ireland: “We will have one day dedicated to reconciliation. Many of the texts on that particular day will have been written by those who are victims. And, this will be a call to the way in which we come together and recognize that certain things should never have happened in the Church and that the Eucharist has an ability to bring healing. I've said on many occasions that in 1932, the Eucharistic Congress was held in Ireland. At that stage, Ireland was coming out of a horrendous civil war which was extremely brutal. The city of Dublin was terribly divided and in many ways destroyed. The archbishop at the time, he managed to use the Eucharistic Congress to bring both sides together for the first time to carry out a big national event. This shows, in fact, that the Eucharist itself can work reconciliation. It's not me who'll be doing it. Communion with Jesus Christ can bring that communion with one another and reconciliation among people.” The Eucharist is the focus of the Congress. Mass, catecheses and testimonies will be fixtures from day to day. Speakers will include cardinals and bishops from around the world and from the Vatican. Laymen like Carl Anderson, the Head of the Knights of Columbus will also make contributions. Though the start of the conference is fast approaching, organizers are still welcoming all comers with open arms.
