TWB_group_500px-wIn a time when fantasy films have replaced adventure films, and historical dramas within that, Peter Weir's film, 'The Way Back', stands as an old fashioned epic slogging 6,500 kms from the winter wastes of Siberia, across the Gobi Desert, over the Himalayas and into India to deliver its payload -- the message of the value of freedom and the indomitability of the human spirit to reach that freedom.

Based on Slavomir Rawicz's memoir The Long Walk, the film depicts the long journey he and six others took escaping a Siberian prison during World War II, eventually making their way to freedom in India. Starring Jim Sturgess, Colin Farrell, Ed Harris, and Saoirse Ronan, it's an intense and epic journey, and Weir masterfully presents it onscreen making the audience feel as if they are part of the tortuous trek.

fr-maurice-proulx-smA handful of priests were among the first people in Quebec to use a movie camera. They were also among the first to grasp the cultural significance of cinema.

Two individuals are particularly significant in this regard:  Fathers Albert Tessier and Maurice Proulx. Today they are widely recognized as pioneers of Quebec cinema arts.

Since 2000, Quebec cinema has been experiencing renewed popularity.  Nevertheless, the key role played by the clergy in the development of a cinematographic and cultural tradition before the Quiet Revolution of the 1960s has not been fully appreciated, even though they managed nothing less than a collective heritage acquisition of cinema during a period dominated by foreign productions.

After initially opposing the cinema-considering it an "imported" invention capable of corrupting French-Canadian youth-the clergy gradually began to promote the showing of movies in parish halls, church basements, schools, colleges and convents.  It came to see film as yet another tool for conveying Catholic values.

Screenwriter Dmitry Sobolev further explains: "When people ask for something from God, he is often wrong because God has a better understanding of what a person wants at that moment." Pyotr Mamonov, who plays the lead character, formerly one of the few rock musicians in the USSR, converted to Eastern Orthodoxy in the 1990s and lives now in an isolated village. blues_brothers-375L'Osservatore Romano, the official Vatican newspaper, has bestowed upon the 1980 comedy The Blues Brothers, its "Catholic film" stamp of approval.  The film starred comedians John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as Jake and Elwood Blues, who felt they were on a mission from God.

"This is a memorable film, and, judging by the facts, a Catholic one," the paper wrote. On the film's 30th anniversary, the Vatican devoted five articles to the topic, says Reuters. The Vatican looked at Jake's story specifically, focusing on how he was released from prison and then worked to reunite his blues band in order to save St. Helen of the Blessed Shroud Orphanage, as an emulation of the life of Christ.
