Mocking-of-ChristThe scrupulous attention to detail in Byzantine art ensured that the Mocking would be represented, but the triumphant spirit of Eastern icons downplays Christ’s humiliation. In such images, Jesus stands at the center of a symmetrical composition, taller than His tormenters and holding Himself firmly upright with a tranquil expression. He often raises His hand in blessing, aloof from the situation around Him.

These static pieces, intended for meditation, do not concern themselves with drawing the viewer into the story, but work to extol Jesus’ grandeur in rising above His persecutors. They bear great similarity to the Byzantine Crucifixes where Jesus is presented alive on the cross, having already conquered death. The red cross of the Resurrection emblazoned on His halo underscores the victorious element in the panel.

Two-Deaths-lowfThis is not the time to hide in the catacombs. He who seeks to save his life will lose it. He who loses his life for the sake of Jesus will inherit eternal life. (Luke 9: 24). We are called by God at this time of history to speak the truth in a spirit of love at every opportunity, to be firm and courageous in our fidelity to Christ, not only in our private lives but also in public life. We are called to participate in the new evangelization with renewed fervor and dedication, not to hide from the world. At the same time we must be detached from any misleading measurement of success or failure. Only God sees the true value of our labours for his Kingdom. We are called to bear public witness to the coming victory of Christ over all the malice and deceits of the ancient enemy of mankind.
theophilos-orig-freedomFrom the pen of Michael D. O'Brien comes an exciting new read, the novel Theophilos.  St. Luke addressed his Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles to a man named Theophilos.

Who was Theophilos? Scripture scholars do not know, making him a fit subject for Michael O’Brien’s vivid imagination. In this fictional narrative, Theophilos is the skeptical but beloved adoptive father of St. Luke. Challenged by the startling account of the “Christos” received in the chronicle from his beloved son Luke and concerned for the newly zealous young man’s fate, Theophilos, a Greek physician and an agnostic, embarks on a search for Luke to bring him home.
