Transfiguration

Nicholas Rottman

Ex. 33:12 – 34:35, 2 Kings 21-2

When Moses stood before the Lord and asked
To see the Face of God and hear His Name,
God put him on a rock and passed him by
To show His back alone; Moses’ face shone.
What then did Moses see? A finite man
Can hardly view th’eternal Triune God.
All time and space is Present to the Lord –
Where, then, and when, was Moses on that hill?

The day had come Elijah to depart;
He crossed the Jordan, and Elisha saw
The Holy Spirit bear him off within
The whirlwind of a flaming chariot.
Plucked out of time, his body still alive,
God took him up, though he will come again.
What mysteries does now Elijah see;
What role has he to play before the end?

Peter, James and John were led by Christ
Up a mount to see transfigured there
The Glory of the Father’s only Son.
Those three beheld a triad, not just One;
To right and left of Jesus stood two more:
Moses, Elijah – Law and Prophets both,
Ancient figures of the past, yet present
Here, witnessing in time, eternity.

Thus, Moses and Elijah each beheld
In mortal body God’s Incarnate Son;
In marvelled intersection, stood between
Time and eternity. His span of life
Is surely the transcendent one event
Uniting all reality into
Communion with th’eternal God as still
Do Moses’ and Elijah’s tales bear witness.
