In 1912, the Oblates begun their permanent ministry among Inuit in Chesterfield Inlet. It was initiated and then continued by Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI), who till today form almost entirely the clergy personnel of the Diocese of Churchill-Hudson Bay. They are responsible for traditional pastoral and sacramental ministry but also promote and support lay ministries, work with families and encourage youth leadership.

Today there are 16 established missions in the Diocese which covers almost whole Nunavut. Oblates are divided according to the needs of particular regions. Each missionary has main place where he resides and from which he visits from 2 up to 5 others missions. Oblates colaborate strictly with local leaders and other pastoral workers. Local leaders are fully responsible for the rhythm of prayer and other pastoral services in the communities in the absence of a priest.
